What is folate?

Folate plays an essential role in cell division and DNA synthesis and is involved in periods of rapid growth and development, such as pregnancy and infancy.

Folate is particularly important to help develop the baby’s skull and spinal cord, which is why low levels of this vitamin, before and during pregnancy, can lead to severe birth defects, called neural tube defects.

When should I start taking this?

The ideal time is 3-6 months prior to pregnancy however there is no bad time to start!

By taking this product in during pre-conception it will help you reach optimal nutrient levels before you’re pregnant. Those initial first weeks are crucial & taking this supplement early can have a positive impact.

Why folate and not folic acid?

The main difference between methylfolate and folic acid is that methylfolate is primarily the biologically active form of folate, whereas folic acid is a synthetic form of folate that needs to go through several conversion steps so that it can be used by the body.

Many women also cannot metabolise synthetic folic acid supplements into usable folate well, which may impact their pregnancy.
